Code Academy

November 10, 2011

This week during break time on Wednesday morning 12 children came to the ICT room to begin learning how to code. They used a website called Codecademy to begin learning the basics of JavaScript. This club has been set up to allow children the opportunity to learn how to programme computers and was set up partly in response to comments made by the Executive Chairman of Google, Eric Schmidt, who criticised schools in England for not teaching computer science. I also attended a seminar over the Summer at Bletchley Park in which computer programmers and educators got together to discuss how to encourage the next generation of software developers.

The children will have opportunities to experience a range of programming languages and hopefully they will be inspired to develop their skills further in their own time. As a child I remember spending hours on my Commodore 16 computer learning how to programme in BASIC.

What a great idea. I hope that it inspires the children. Regards
