Music Monday #1 Louis and Bebe Barron

March 14, 2011

Every Monday I will be profiling musicians who use computers or other electronic technology to compose their music. To kick off this series of posts I am going to write about two pioneers of electronic music – the husband-and-wife team of Louis and Bebe Barron.

They were both born in the 1920’s in the United States of America and are creditied with writing the first electronic music and the first entirely electronic film score for the 1956 film Forbidden Planet (See below).

The Barrons composed their music by creating electrical circuits to generate weird and wonderful sounds. They didn’t even regard what they were doing as composition as they often had no idea what sounds were going to be created and they could never be sure that they could recreate a sound.

If you are a Spotify user you can listen to the entire Forbidden Planet soundtrack online.
